LOCAL BUSINESSES HELP TILT CONTEMPORARY DANCE PERFORM IN PUBLIC
SCHOOLS
Blue Rooster Productions, based on the Big Island, is TILT Contemporary
Dance Company's newest corporate sponsor. Blue Rooster's president
Les Hershorn donated $200 to help fund TILT's in the schools educational
programs. Maui Electric Company continues their support of TILT
with a $200 grant to help support the Every Body Dances program
for students with learning disabilities.
Both
grants will be used to fund TILT's Fall lecture/demonstrations
for special education students and at-risk youth in the public
schools. The lecture/demonstrations are part of TILT's 2003 performing
season that include the FULL TILT concert on November 6 at the
Castle Theater.
TILT
Contemporary Dance Company has spent the past six years promoting
and preserving an American art form - modern dance. Through effective
artistic partnerships on Maui and the Mainland TILT has developed
new community programs FOOTWORK Dance Film Festival, for example,
dance classes for special education students, and progressively
ambitious concerts. TILT has been featured on California Connected,
a PBS program by station KCET TV Los Angeles, and on the
front page of the Business section in the San Francisco Chronicle.
ABC TV heard of TILT's educational programs and contacted
artistic director Renee Beauvais to find students to feature on
their family reality show, SWITCHED.
TILT's
primary mission is to promote the art of dance especially American
modern dance as an integral part of public discourse and community
well-being. TILT provides the community with a variety of services
which help unite our community, and connects them to the exciting
and changing world of global dance culture. For more information
about TILT or its programs call 572-3094, ext.2 or email info@tiltdance.org.
LEF
FOUNDATION STEPS UP TO THE PLATE TO FUND NEW ART WORK
Over the past several years funding for the performing arts has
become a greater challenge than it used to be, especially for
small performing arts groups. The LEF Foundation's efforts reflect
a belief in the value of experimentation and in the important
role that art and its practice hold in society. LEF has generously
donated $10,000 to TILT Contemporary Dance Company for the creation
and presentation of Cost of Freedom.
Cost
of Freedom was premiered in 1999 at Maui Academy of Arts Brave
One Acts. Choreographer Renee Beauvais says the dance has all
new choreography and new music by composer Craig Murray. Only
the spoken text will remain the same. Cost of Freedom uses letters
from Vietnam soldiers to show a glimpse into a soldiers' experience.
Cost of Freedom has cultural resonance and timeliness. That's
why the LEF Foundation is underwriting the production. I'm deeply
grateful for their support says Beauvais. Cost of Freedom will
be on the program of the FULL TILT concert on November 6 at the
Castle Theater.
