Aloha!
Welcome to the virtual world of TILT Contemporary Dance!
Artistic
Direction
As a choreographer, my aim is to make dances that matter - beyond
technical virtuosity (not at the exclusion) and spectacle, that
move people emotionally or spiritually, that change peoples'
lives. I am particularly interested in inter-disciplinary collaborations,
using text, social commentary, and dance for the camera and
movement invention.
My
philosophy is that dance training and performance is about being
in present time, being in the "now". Life is dynamic
and we create the new world on the bones of the old. I use dance
techniques, visualizations, metaphysical exercises, and breathing
techniques for dancers to find themselves and their own expressive
voice; and to place themselves in the center of their creativity.
Dance is ultimately about being present: the dancer, having
a free body, becomes a space of controlled energy and transformations.
The dancer's awareness of the relationship between form and
expression is what distinguishes dance as art from dance as
an ordinary event.

O
body swayed to music, O brightening glance,
How can we know the dancer from the dance?
